THE PROBLEM
The classification problem.
Overclassification is not a paperwork inconvenience. It stops information from reaching the people who need it. Cleared analysts spend one to three hours classifying a single document, cross-referencing multiple Security Classification Guides, applying paragraph-level markings, and second-guessing every decision because nobody wants to be the person who gets it wrong.
The result: documents default to the highest possible classification. Information that should flow laterally gets locked behind markings that are more restrictive than necessary. Spillage risk increases because the volume of classified material grows beyond what any review process can manage.
The tooling to address this did not exist — not because the problem was hard to see, but because building software for air-gapped classified environments is genuinely difficult.

THE INTERFACE
The Cadmus workspace
The Cadmus interface presents a three-panel classification workspace. The center panel displays the document with color-coded, sentence-level classification markings applied inline. The left panel shows classification metadata, including the SCG provision and EO 13526 reason backing each marking. The right panel displays the overall document classification level, a confidence score, and the Ask Cadmus natural-language guidance interface.
Every element is traceable. The analyst can follow any marking back to its source in the governing guide.
